Calcium-Based Stones like Marble, Onyx and Travertines etch and stain very easily, sometimes faster than they can be wiped away. No liquid sealer can prevent this issue. TuffSkin provides complete etch and stain protection.
Tuffskin is a proprietary stone laminate similar to a cell phone screen protector on a larger scale and designed specifically for stone adhesion. It is not a liquid at all. It is a 4 mil thick polyester manufactured in roll form that can be applied on all shapes and forms or stones. We have seen it all!
Yes. Stone protected with TuffSkin will not etch.
TuffSkin protects against scratching, chipping and stun marks. Although the TuffSkin laminate could be damaged, your stone will not. We do recommend the use of cutting boards, placemats & trivets, just as you would with your natural stone. Should your tops become scratched, TuffSkin is easily removed and replaced.
TuffSkin is very chemical resistant. There are no household chemicals that can harm our top coating.
Yes, TuffSkin can take the heat and stay in the kitchen. In the bathroom, blow dryers and curling irons do not affect TuffSkin. It can withstand heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Yes, we have a specific product for that. TuffSkin EXT will not turn yellow and has a UV inhibitor built in to the hardcoat. In full sun, it should last approximately 2 years. With a patio cover, expect it to last longer.
The decision to replace TuffSkin is an aesthetic determination based upon personal preference. On average, hotels replace them every 8-10 years, busy restaurants and bars 1-5 years, and residential customers every 4-8 years. Regardless of when the decision is made to replace TuffSkin, the performance of the product will remain acid, alkaline, water and oil proof for as long as TuffSkin is protecting the surface.
You may use a non-abrasive stone cleaner like TuffSkin All Purpose Cleaner or even a glass cleaner like ‘Sprayway’ to clean the surface of TuffSkin. Final buffing can be done with a dry microfiber towel.
A TuffSkin installation is environmentally safe and creates no odors. We only use a soapy solution, some alcohol found in most homes and our professional tools. There are no harmful fumes or stone dust during our installation, families and even pets can stay at home while the installation is done.
It depends on climate and humidity. The maximum bond time is achieved in 72 hours or less, but countertops can be used within 2 hours after an installation.
It all depends on the complexity of the design and the amount of stone to be covered. An average kitchen takes about 1 day. Hotel projects can be completed at 10-25 rooms per day, and bars and restaurants in 2-3 days.
Satin or Gloss are the two finishes available. Satin is used for an honed finish, whereas Gloss is used for a polished finish.
TuffSkin is quoted per job including product, installation, and warranty. Prices depend on sizes, quantities, waste factor and service areas. After all this information is collected, we will send a formal estimate to our client.
TuffSkin never peels on its own. TuffSkin can be peeled back with some effort. We have seen this in bars, especially gaming bars. These types of installations require monthly review by staff. We see no issues in home or hotel room installations. TuffSkin is a better way to maintain these surfaces.

TUFFSKIN APPLICATION INFORMATION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The following information provides specific details about TuffSkin Countertop Sealer and its application. TuffSkin protects natural stones from acid-etching and staining. It is not designed to hide imperfections in the stone.
1. Only applicable to the surface of natural stone tops. Not floors or textured walls. It is installed on the flat surface only, and not on corners or edges. The installer cuts the coating at a slight angle to lessen the chance of the product snagging, which may cause pull up.
2. TuffSkin goes on each individual piece of natural stone, ending just short of each end seam. This assures a natural appearance as seams are usually lower than the surface of the stone.
3. The stone surface gets cleaned multiple times and with different techniques during the application process to minimize the chance of contaminants adhering between the TuffSkin and the stone. There is still a chance that contaminants such as dust land on the surface of the stone or TuffSkin adhesive after cleaning but before actual application (a matter of seconds), which may cause a visual defect (such as but not limited to a bump).
This is a visual defect only and will not affect the performance of TuffSkin, protecting the surface. Please understand we are talking about a tiny bump which usually is not visible unless one gets very close to the top and is looking for it.
4. All natural stone may contain divots, nicks, holes, cracks, chips or other defects that change the surface appearance of the stone. The normal installation of TuffSkin does not include the repair of these conditions. If the owner desires these stone imperfections repaired, they can have the work done by a competent stone restoration company in advance of the installation.
Any imperfections after this preparation work will be visible through the TuffSkin. Please understand that any imperfections mentioned above are already visible within your stone. Having TuffSkin applied to your top will not create a perfect surface if the stone under it is not perfect.
5. If the seam or edge of the stone has existing chips, when we apply TuffSkin we will cut around the chips. We cannot let the TuffSkin float freely over a chipped edge because it increases the possibility the TuffSkin snags and starts pulling up. The same is true where an edge meets a seam.
We will slightly round the corner of TuffSkin to greatly increase product durability. This radius cut is a freehand cut and thus cannot always be 100% perfect. Installers will cut these back to the best possible radius.
6. Almost all surface visual damage, such as minor acid-etching, is not visible through the installed TuffSkin as the reflection has changed to the reflection of the TuffSkin. If there is a stain, it could be visible through the coating.
7. Occasionally, air or water bubbles form under the TuffSkin after application. This is normal and trapped water always evaporates on its own.
8. After installation, you will need to treat the now coated stone similarly to how natural stone is supposed to be treated.
- No cutting on it, this will scratch the TuffSkin.
- No abrasive cleaners, this will scratch the TuffSkin.
- Hot pans may be laid on TuffSkin per the manufacturer up to 400 degrees.
- Do not allow anyone to pick at the edges. The TuffSkin has a special edge adhesive but it CAN be removed if picked at as its designed to be replaced in case of damage.
